Reclaiming Death is an ongoing curatorial project which began as a virtual exhibition and research inquiry as part of Hyperallergic’s 2023-24 Emily Hall Tremaine Journalism Fellowship for Curators. Beginning with the history of funerary arts and connecting these past examples to contemporary practitioners, Reclaiming Death, explored the living legacy of art and artists playing a central role in death practices. In Fall of 2024 the first in-person iteration of the exhibition took place at Ma's House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Nation and featured new works from the initial group of artists as well as additional Shinnecock artists.

The next phase of the project will be the development of a publication including further historical research and a wider range of artists. In tandem with the long-term publication planning will be the curation of the 2nd in-person exhibition projected for Fall of 2026. The open call linked to the right serves as a platform to consider works for both elements of the project as well as an archive of BIPOC artists working within the themes of end-of-life care, death, and mourning.
